Nemo, the Survivor

Life is an adventure for sure. The adventure of Nemo, the only surviving baby goose after his mother's nest was raided by a coyote, started before he was born! Thanks to the Zmodo HD sPoE system, we’ve successfully recorded Nemo’s adventure and witnessed the true miracle of life.

Nemo’s mom, Mama G, made a nest on the lawn near our office and laid eight eggs. We happened to find it and set up a Zmodo simplified power over Ethernet security system to watch the family without disturbing them.

After setting up the nest, Mama G sat on her eggs almost the whole day, except for snack time when she would go for a stroll looking for something to eat. Goose Dad was always around the nest, acting as a guard, poised to protect his family. Days passed and everything went quite well, with viewers able to watch along via live online streaming of the nest.

However, as we all know, security videos are most commonly associated with catching thieves in the act, and sadly, this time was no different. At 2am on the night following Mother’s Day, a coyote was caught on tape stealing Mama G’s eggs. In the footage we can see Mama G trying to defend her nest but being repeatedly driven off by the coyote as it steals egg after egg. We thought all was lost for our goose family, but later we found that Mama G returned to her nest. She was able to hide one single egg well enough to protect it from the coyote. Thanks to the fast thinking of Mama G, one egg out of eight escaped the scavenger, and we gave that egg a name - Nemo.

Naturally, we were dismayed to see the footage when we returned to work the following morning, and our team decided to erect a barrier to prevent further attacks and keep the lone surviving egg safe. We constructed a fence of wooden pallets around the nesting site with an opening for the mother to return through, with the plan to close it completely at night to protect her and the egg. However, Mama G must have been scared off, and the nest sat abandoned for the whole day. A member of our management team feared for the egg, as temperatures would surely drop overnight, so she took the egg home and set up a makeshift incubator. Low and behold, a few days later it hatched, and Nemo was born!

Nemo was under the care of the nearby University of Illinois Veterinary Clinic for three weeks after hatching. He then spent several months at a wildlife rehabilitation shelter, where he got the hang of being a goose and foraging for food, while also making friends with two other young geese. He became particularly close to Boots, a young gosling who was being rehabilitated after being hit by a car.

On November 9th, Nemo and his buddy, Boots, were released into the lake where Boots was born. The geese were a joy to behold, testing out freedom for the first time. Nemo loved the abundant clean water, and spent a lot of time cleaning and preening his feathers. The two swam around the lake, exploring and taking in the open space. The inseparable pair seems to be doing well with their newfound freedom, and as they build up their wing strength, they will soon be able to fly with the rest of the flock!
